Abstract:New developments in pronunciation pedagogy resulting from a general tendency in foreign language teaching have embraced communicative and holistic approaches. Moreover, current trends have been influenced by fruitful products from other disciplines such as psychology, neurolinguistics, drama and technology. This paper presents an overview of innovative approaches to the teaching of practical phonetics and points to their common characteristics in the expectation to offer some new solutions for those intrinsic difficulties in traditional classroom teaching of English pronunciation, such as recurrence of mistakes by repeated practice and negative transfer of the Chinese language as the mother tongue of students.
