In the course of design principles of foundation engineering, students are often confused by the concept of punching and shearing of independent foundations under columns. To clarify this problem, we analyzed the failure mechanism, forms of failure surface and failure characteristics. The provisions of relevant codes were compared together. Two specific examples were also introduced to clarify conceptions of punching and shearing. The analysis in this paper will be helpful to students to understand some basic concepts in the teaching process.
