    Abstract:

The Johns Hopkins University is regarded as the America’s first research university, and the elite education system for undergraduates is adopted in the Department of Civil Engineering, which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET since 1936. In view of the current background of joining the international engineering alliance – Washington Accord and the requirements of civil engineering education accreditation, the introduction to the civil engineering undergraduate program and its objectives at Johns Hopkins University was presented, which was further compared with the program at Wuhan University. The teaching contents and methods of two professional courses – Perspectives on the Evolution of Structures and Structural Design II of Johns Hopkins University were described afterwards. Detailed discussions were provided by referring to the elite education system, the combined study and research mode and the professional practice, which could enable the quality enhancement of talent training. Further suggestions and thoughts were also presented to improve the international influence and recognition of the engineering education in China.
