    Abstract:

In the teaching of material mechanics, case teaching is an effective method to stimulate students" interest and initiative in learning. At present, mainstream textbooks for materials mechanics are based on mechanically related structures or components, and rarely involve civil engineering cases. In the long history of civil engineering, there are many construction achievements and also many failure cases. If these civil engineering cases are selected as teaching cases, they can not only make the course full of vitality, but also enable students to get more professional knowledge. Based on the curriculum of material mechanics, several representative cases related to civil engineering are listed in this paper, including the torsion collapse of Tacoma Narrows Bridge, the collapse accident of bus shelter ceilings after snowstorm in Hefei, the collapse of deep foundation pit in Nanning, the collapse accident of Quebec Bridge in Canada, and the bungee jump accident of a female tourist in Zimbabwe. The above cases refer to several chapters in the course of Material Mechanics, respectively the torsional deformation, combined bending and deformation, strength theory, stability of the compression bar and dynamic load, and so on.
