Abstract:It is of great significance to carry out English teaching for core curricula in civil engineering in a bid to cultivate high-quality professionals adapting to the trend of globalization. The course of Concrete Structure Design Fundamentals possesses the characteristics of science, engineering and practice, and is representative in teaching. This course was chosen to demonstrate the bilingual teaching practice for MAO Yisheng Class and English teaching practice for overseas students in Beijing Jiaotong University. In compliance with the basic requirements of engineering education certification, the teaching notion, content, means, methods, course project and grading policy were reformed, aiming at strengthening English thinking and application of two groups of students with distinct traits. Practice shows that the pilot courses have worked well; English course project and online platform for communication between teachers and students, based on information-assisted teaching means, can stimulate students" learning initiative, deepen their understanding of knowledge, and effectively improve their English application ability. Finally, suggestions for the sustainable improvement of the courses were summarized.
