Abstract:The introduction of the emerging engineering education has provided a new leading force for China to actively promote the construction of a strong education country. Universities have the important mission of cultivating new types of leading talents in science and technology innovation, so they should be at the vanguard of the times, strengthen the innovation and entrepreneurial ability of engineering talents, and cultivate "moral and talented" leading talents for "future needs". Universities need to continuously promote innovation in higher education, deepen education and teaching reform, improve and enhance the personnel training system. The education curriculum is the central element in the training of personnel and an important anchor point for educational reform. As an important basic mechanics course for engineering majors, Mechanics of Materials is of great significance in the cultivation of innovative engineering talents. It is imperative to reform the teaching of the course. The teaching team analysed the current teaching situation of the Mechanics of Materials course. The course is highly theoretical, logically complex and practical engineering. Problems that can exist in the teaching of the course such as dry teaching content, abstract derivation process and rigid evaluation system. Therefore, based on the concept of OBE (Outcome Based Education), the teaching team has made full use of the many online information resources to explore the innovative teaching content, teaching methods and assessment methods of the course and put forward the innovative teaching system of "Interest+Understand+Application (IUA)". This teaching system can enhance students' interest in learning, deepen their understanding of the content and strengthen their application of knowledge, thus solving the current teaching challenges. The aim of this innovative teaching system is to comprehensively enhance the practical application capabilities of engineering students to meet the needs of society for the training of new engineering talents. After proposing the teaching system, the teaching team conducted a practical study using the teaching of a major civil engineering and transportation course at Southeast University as an example. Application of the "IUA" teaching system in the teaching of mechanics of materials, through the presentation of engineering cases in the classroom, the use of campus facilities and the rich network of resources to make the mechanics of materials classroom format more diverse. The "IUA" teaching system is applied to the teaching content of Mechanics of Materials, and the classroom format of Mechanics of Materials is made more diversified through the presentation of engineering cases in the classroom, the use of campus facilities and rich Internet resources, and the improvement of course evaluation methods to make more reasonable scores. The effectiveness of the reform of this teaching system was tested through student satisfaction surveys in the classroom, students' knowledge acquisition ability and students' extra-curricular practical achievements, etc. The teaching effect was positive.
