Abstract:Against the backdrop of the "AI+" era, which is reshaping the discipline of civil engineering, this paper examines four major challenges in traditional teaching: superficial integration of technology, fragmented knowledge structures, disjointed development of competencies, and weak collaboration between academia and industry. Building upon the theoretical framework that conceptualizes "Civil Engineering as Complex Systems Science," the study proposes an innovative teaching model entitled "Intelligent Construction of the Future." This model enables a profound transformation through a "four-layer, four-dimensional" reconstructive framework. Firstly, the technical support layer integrates multi-modal perception and generative AI to establish an intelligent neural center encompassing "perception-decision-execution," effectively addressing the lack of practical training in high-risk scenarios. Secondly, the content reconstruction layer dissects the curriculum into a dual-chain structure of "basic theory + intelligent application," and dynamically integrating real-time industrial data streams. Thirdly, the process reengineering layer develops a four-dimensional capability-building system spanning "cognition → application → innovation → decision-making," reshaping the entire teaching cycle through mixed reality sandboxes and generative design workshops. Finally, the evaluation transformation layer constructs a multimodal competency graph system to enable targeted interventions for identified competency gaps. Using the course "Digital Bridge Engineering" as an empirical platform, a four-stage developmental pathway has been established: "virtual-real integrated training – project-driven progression – competency mapping assessment – collaboration-based ecological support."This model aims to effectively address the challenges of traditional civil engineering education by breaking through existing limitations, promoting its application across course clusters in design, construction, and operation and maintenance. It seeks to provide a scalable and replicable framework to tackle the industry’s projected shortage of one million intelligent construction professionals, drive the transition from labor-intensive to technology-intensive practices, enhance China's influence in the global infrastructure sector, and support national strategic objectives such as resilient urban development and low-carbon building construction.
