Under the macro background of current stock optimization, the protection and renewal of the historical environment has become the core issue that architecture education must respond to. Based on the specialized teaching practice of "renewal design" for the fourth grade of architecture major of South China University of Technology in recent ten years, this paper systematically expounds the innovative mode of applying the deep integration of architectural planning and research-based design methods to the teaching of renewal design of historical environment. Firstly, the practice of planning and research in architectural design teaching is combed. From the three dimensions of openness, authenticity and process, the topic design strategy suitable for planning and research teaching is discussed in detail. The spiral progressive teaching plan framework of "three stages and nine links" is proposed, which transforms the teaching concept of abstraction into an operable and evaluable specific teaching process. Then, the key points of thinking training and ability training in each stage are analyzed in depth. At the same time, the typical problems in teaching practice are pointed out, and the corresponding countermeasures are put forward. The teaching mode guides students to establish a systematic design thinking from value judgment, problem definition to spatial translation, and improves their ability to comprehensively investigate, logically analyze and innovate to solve complex practical problems, providing a reference system for the teaching reform of architectural design in the stock era.
