建筑最早出现时并未有美学的功能。人们最初是为遮风雨、避虫害而建造穴居、巢居,当时绝没有想到什么艺术。但精神与物质是不能被完全割裂的,当日常生活、宗教仪式或政治生活的某种具体需要的建筑目的获得满足之后,建筑就出现了另外一种要求,即艺术形象和美。
