Abstract:The department in the university is the vanguard and backbone of the "Double First-rae" construction. The study found that the deans of departments meet the three characteristics of interpersonal role, information role, and decision-making role in the construction by Mintzberg Management Theory. At the same time, there are role dilemmas such as conflict of multiple roles, challenge of leadership role, unknown role cognition, and excessive role burden. In order to better achieve the "Double First-rate" construction goals, we should alleviate predicament of the deans by strengthening role recognition, optimizing the selection process, innovating assessment content, and enhancing role expectations.
