The College of Civil Engineering of Tongji University is committed to cultivating globally competent social pillars and professional elites, and actively carries out international exchanges and cooperation. In July 2024, the College launched the “Spanish Civil Engineering Exploration Camp” summer program in Madrid and Barcelona, Spain, which aims to enhance the ability of undergraduate students in practical innovation through the theme of “structural conceptual design and architectural art”. The aim of the program is to enhance the ability of undergraduate students in practical innovation through the theme of “Structural Conceptual Design and the Art of Architecture”. The program adopted a variety of methods, including literature study, lectures, field trips and cross-cultural exchanges, to let the students gain a deeper understanding of the humanities and customs of Spain, and experience the beauty of architectural art from a close distance. The students studied courses combining cutting-edge technology and architectural practice at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, visited iconic buildings such as the Sagrada Familia, the Casa de Bartolo and the Casa de la Mira, etc., experienced the aesthetics and design concepts of architecture, and improved their cross-cultural communication skills. The project achieved remarkable results, as students gained a deeper understanding of cutting-edge technologies in civil engineering, deepened their understanding of the profession, and enhanced their teamwork skills and international perspective. The program also summarized the improvement measures, such as strengthening the preparation work, increasing the interaction with professors, and enriching the study format, in order to further enhance the effectiveness of the program.
