Abstract:Personal statement which can fully show comprehensive qualities of applicants has become one of the most important evidences to audit and judge the applicants for western universities. However, due to differences between Chinese and western cultures, domestic applicants have some misunderstandings in writing personal statements. This study utilized domestic university graduates who tend to further education abroad as well as enrollment representatives of universities of UK and US as the research objects. From perspective of western culture, this paper firstly summarized main problems of current domestic applicants in writing personal statements, furthermore, pointed out the problems that should be noticed during writing, and gave corresponding suggestions of writing upon the basis of interviews and questionnaires.
