Abstract:Outcome-based assessment (OBA) is an emerging approach for ensuring that graduates of engineering programs acquire the skills and knowledge required for successful professional careers. Currently, 15 countries that are signatories of the Washington Accord implement this assessment approach. China, which holds a provisional status of the accord, will implement this system in the next few years. The OBA represents a new criterion for accreditation of engineering programs in addition to the traditional input-based assessment criteria. This paper presents an overview of the OBA process based on the experience of other countries. A brief description of the elements of the assessment process is presented, including leadership structure, assessment elements, assessment design, data collection and analysis, and feedback for continual improvement. A pilot study for assessing oral presentations in the College of Civil Engineering at Fuzhou University is described. Since OBA in various countries is similar, this paper should help engineering programs around China in the implementation of this process when it becomes mandatory by the China Association for Science and Technology.

Abstract:Most schools set introduction to bridge engineering courses as a professional introductory course, also part of the school set introduction to bridge engineering courses as a school elective which elective for students outside the professional, at this time, the object of instruction are non-bridge engineering students, these students are learning this course without any professional knowledge of basic. If the course is taught by the way of professional introduction, it often leads students unable to understand spoken content, thereby reducing the interest in learning. To improve the effect of introduction to bridge engineering course teaching, simulated students’ interest in learning, expand students’ knowledge, according to the actual situation of school elective, reforming the teaching content and teaching methods. Practices shows that, after adjustment of teaching content, with tell stories, speak the classic bridge, class discussion, hand painted bridge and so on ways to teaching introduction to bridge engineering course, students are easy to understand the knowledge of teaching, it can be effective in simulating students’ enthusiasms for learning, thereby improving the quality of teaching.

In the mode, teaching process has been divided into three parts: primary learning, associate learning and concomitant learning. In addition to the traditional teaching method lectures in class, symposium on special subjects, subject reading after classes and practical training also used to organize the associate learning. Information platform was built to help students learning indirectly. The teaching mode has been changed from teaching only in classroom to learn from different channels and thinking freely. Under the guidance of this mode, a series of reforms and attempts about teaching target, teaching contents and teaching methods have been undertaken.
