    • The construction of first-class undergraduate education: The origin, quality representation and approach

      Abstract:Undergraduate education is the most important foundation to improve the quality of higher education. The construction of first-class undergraduate education is not only the common trend of international higher education development, but also the core key and inevitable requirement to realize the historic leap of China from a big country in higher education to a strong country in higher education. First-class undergraduate education quality characterization is a collection of political character, era character and value character, can be competent for training when national revival highest highly qualified builders and successors of socialism basic task and practice of developing great top era as the core mission, to achieve the ultimate goal of college students’ comprehensive and lifelong development is not only the first-class undergraduate education political character, era character and value character in turn reflected, and determine whether the Chinese undergraduate education truly fundamental standards of first class. To promote the construction of first-class undergraduate education in China, we must adhere to the overall leadership of the Communist Party of China, give play to the leading role of the government and construction autonomy to universities. The first is to implement the requirements of "three qualified" and "eight first", change the educational ideology, and establish the central position of undergraduate education; Second, we should adhere to the concept of student center, results-oriented and continuous improvement, comprehensively promote the revolution of university classroom teaching and the construction of first-class courses and specialties, focus on the construction of undergraduate teaching quality assurance system, and form a high-level talent training system.       Abstract:The implementation of small-class seminar is an important measure to improve the quality of undergraduate education and build first-class universities in China. Obstacle factors of developing small-class seminar are analyzed by using the methods of literature research and expert consultation; the main causes of obstacle are determined based on establishing the interpretative structure model. In order to promote small-class seminar, it is particularly important for the government to change the development concept of undergraduate education and increase policy and financial support; furthermore, lead to the more concern and promote all-round reform in colleges and universities. On this basis, the relevant strategies are put forward and helpful for the government and colleges to ascertain breakthrough points to promote small-class seminar.

      Abstract:With the advance of "general enrollment and diversion training" pattern in local institutions, the problems of specialty differentiation in the division of architectural specialty are increasingly outstanding. This paper finds that major selection is influenced by six factors and three levels by analyzing students’ process of thinking constructing. In the usual diversion pattern, the major selection presents two consistency deviations of architectural tendency even though the prospect and subject strength are similar between two majors. Cognitive image causes the first deviation in major selection, and mere exposure effect reinforces the first deviation while group psychology leads to the second deviation. Therefore, it is an important guarantee for the overall planning of specialty construction to formulate targeted coping strategies and optimize specialty diversion mechanism.

      Abstract:In order to meet the urgent need of international engineering talents for the development of Chinese transportation construction enterprises going abroad, Chongqing Jiaotong University has carried out exploration and practice of university-enterprise cooperative training mode for 10 years. Based on the three dimensions abilities of international engineering talents from engineering knowledge, engineering practice and engineering management, diversified school-enterprise education modes such as "3+1"Overseas Class for short term customization, "1+3"International Engineering Class for long term training and "2+2"Cross-border Compound Experimental Class have been built for flexible setting. Through cooperatively recruiting students, designing course program, presenting courses or lectures, organizing academic competitions, guiding graduation practice and evaluating training quality, the mutual benefit and win-win cooperative education long-acting mechanism has been built. More than 3 500 graduates have been supplied to China Communications Construction Company, China Railway Engineering Corporation and China Railway Construction Corporation to meet the needs of the internationalized, diversified and high-quality talents for The Belt and Road construction.

      Abstract:In order to promote the reform of school education and teaching, stimulate the innovation consciousness and passion of undergraduates, and enhance the innovation ability of students, Henan Polytechnic University explores the undergraduate tutorial system in the cultivation process of landscape architecture undergraduates. On the basis of fully analyzing the research hotspots and trends of the tutorial system for undergraduates, and combined with advantages and characteristics of our college, this paper constructs the "counselor + homeroom teacher + undergraduate tutor" training mode of tutor system, a tutorial system which has tutor group as the core is formed. This paper analyzes the operation mechanism of the three modules of tutor development, main ways and target and task, expounds the practical experience and effect of the undergraduate tutorial system, and puts forward some suggestions on the localization reform of the undergraduate tutorial system to promote the implementation and improvement in architecture related specialties.

      Abstract:Construction materials quality is the basis of civil engineering, construction materials quality inspection is a key procedure of engineering construction. Therefore, the construction materials should be tested regularly as required during the construction process. As a highly professional, normative and technical work, the quality inspection of construction material requires employees to master abundant relative knowledge and professional skills. One of the most important methods for construction material inspectors to acquire relevant knowledge and skills is occupation skill training. This study discussed the current situations in applied talents training of construction materials quality inspection. The characteristics, regular patterns and main challenges of occupation skill training were analyzed as well. Then the improvement measures and basic implementation strategies to improve the training effects were expounded briefly. Then the Three Consciousness for employees and training emphasis were explained in detail. This study also underlined the significance of building multiple teaching resources. Finally, a new five step progressive training method is proposed based on the training practice.

    • The construction and practice of graduates’ innovative ability cultivation system of civil engineering specialty based on the idea of large-scale engineering

      Abstract:In order to improve the innovation ability training level of civil engineering graduate students, the following seven factors affecting the cultivation of innovation ability of graduate students were analyzed: source of students, academic dissertations, supervisors, training environment, training mode, training system and large-scale engineering. And the inner law of the interactive development between the seven key factors was revealed. The reform of educational idea, teaching method and mean were carried out. Four training platforms were established, including the comprehensive experiment and training platform inside school, the sharing training platform inside and outside school, the innovation alliance training platform and the large-scale engineering industrial base training platform. Three training modes were proposed based on large-scale engineering, including the practical research and development mode, the group discussion mode and the open training mode. Finally an innovative three-dimensional training system integrating "production, study, research and application" was created and put into practice and achieved remarkable effects. The teamwork-oriented, engineering practice and innovation ability of graduate students were greatly improved.

      Abstract:At present, there are still some problems in the full-time professional master education in China, such as the lack of distinct differences between the education of full-time professional and academic degree postgraduates, the lack of professional accomplishment of tutors, the emphasis on academic training rather than practical training, and the lack of effective evaluation system, which seriously restrict the development of professional master education. In order to meet the urgent demand for high-level application-oriented professionals in the development of social and economic in China, build positive education platform of university-enterprise cooperation based on the unity of professional and academic. The education platform can provide practical education for professional degree postgraduate. Adopt the system of two tutors for each student, building a high-level and stable postgraduate tutorial staff with strong engineering practice ability to provide essential conditions for professional training.       Abstract:Under the background of emerging engineering education, the cultivation of outstanding scientific and technological talents in geotechnical engineering asks for higher requirements for graduate education in terms of innovation, scientific research and academy. "Scientific scaffolding" mode recommended by this research is created under "capability domain" for the first time, which is different from the traditional teaching mode, and designed by considering competency training rather than contents of courses. The graduate education is a process of construction of ability system, namely, the building of "scientific scaffolding". In the training programs, curriculum teaching is the initial period and critical part for the assembling of "scientific scaffolding", which is given by distinct researching attributes. Courses organized within multi-disciplines, are taught by learning a series of special subjects, forming a new education pattern that learning a special subject, carrying out a research at the same time. The training of scientific research is conducted through the whole process of graduate education from the beginning. In this paper, the theoretical basis of "scientific scaffolding" mode is discussed, the designing idea is presented, the implementation processes are investigated, and ideal teaching effects are highlighted in practice, which may break new frontiers for the graduate education.

      Abstract:Based on the comparative perspective of engineering ethics education in China and USA, this paper proposes engineering ethics education mode with Chinese characteristics based on the curriculum ideological and political education approach. The teaching objectives emphasize the guidance of mainstream values; the education theme focuses on carrying out the requirements of moral education in engineering professional courses; the teaching method highlights the infiltration education under the concept of curriculum education. This mode is helpful to broaden the theme of engineering ethics from the perspective of the organic combination of engineering technology and humanistic education, engineering discipline culture and professional ethos. Engineering ethics education, as the part of localization strategy in curriculum ideological and political education, should strengthen system guarantee, strengthen the concept recognition of teachers, construct a collaborative mechanism for teachers, and enhance the infiltration education effect.

      Abstract:The Report to the Eighteenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China puts forward morality education as the fundamental task of education. Therefore, higher education should understand curriculum ideology from the mission and responsibilities of higher education in the new era, and regard serving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation as an important mission of education. Under the guidance of the OBE concept, the port, waterway and coastal engineering major of Tongji University takes student-centered as the logical starting point. Aiming at the current situation and existing issues of the ideological and political construction of professional courses, the teaching system is first designed as a whole, and subsequently the professional courses are sorted and condensed. Ideological and political concepts, and finally integrate the ideological and political elements into the revision of training goals, graduation requirements and curriculum syllabus.       Abstract:The exploration and practice of curriculum ideological and political elements integrated into professional curriculum teaching is Xi Jinping’s important observations of higher education. Aiming at the current limitations of curriculum ideological and political education in civil engineering, grasping key issues, taking the seismic design of underground structures course as an example, the paper proposes to establish the correct professional curriculum teaching goals and ideological and political teaching goals, and actively enrich and expand teaching methods. According to the teaching content of seismic design of underground structure, deeply excavate the ideological and political elements related to the knowledge points of professional courses, and set clear goal orientation.       Abstract:Professional experimental course is the effective path for students to develop comprehensive abilities and innovation ability. Taking the course of mixture design of cement concrete as an example, ideological elements including engineer professional quality, scientific literacy, creative ability and values of honesty, kindness, mutual help and cooperation were explored. Considering the teaching objectives, course content and teaching methods, the ideological elements were designed into teaching process to incorporate with the professional knowledge and skills. The teaching practice showed that students paid more attention and showed more enthusiasm to this course. Meanwhile the degree of participation of students and communication between students were improved, and enhanced the students’ interests to the civil engineering materials and the ability to analyze and solve problems.

      Abstract:Structural mechanics is one of the professional foundation courses for the civil engineering, railway engineering, hydraulic engineering, and plays the role of bridge between the foundation course and the professional course. The structural mechanics course of Beijing Jiaotong University is firstly approved to be first-class course in 2020, which indicates the course construction and the talent cultivation are in a new stage. In order to find a way out of the problems and difficulties during the construction of structural mechanics, the "3E+3E" engineering teaching idea following "first emotional perception, then rational exploration" is proposed, in which the moral cultivation plays the guiding role, the diversified and distinguished engineering talents with innovation spirits is taken for the cultivating goal, and improving high level course, highlighting innovation, and increasing challenge level are the basic requirements of course construction. With the ideological and political education, optimization of teaching objectives, innovation of teaching methods during the teaching process, the first-class course construction of structural mechanics is explored. Teaching practice shows that "3E+3E" teaching idea provides the new thinking for the construction of "ideological and political education" and "high-level, innovative and challenging course", creates the conditions for realizing the talents training with knowledge, capacity, and quality, and explores an advantage approach to teaching transform from "imparting teaching" to "inquiry teaching".

      Abstract:Direct analysis design method is recommended as primary design method by several domestic and foreign steel structures design standards. However, textbooks and teaching contents of steel structures serial courses are obsolete, and are lagged behind the current standards and the discipline frontier. Based on above-mentioned issues, exploration and practice are implemented in steel structures serial courses on direct analysis design method. In theory teaching phase, the principle and idea of direct analysis method are taught step by step based on standard for design of steel structures. The basic concepts and implementation methods of the key points in the method are highlighted, such as overall structural imperfections, member imperfections, residual stress, joint stiffness and member eccentricity. In practical teaching phase, such as thesis for undergraduate and training programs of innovation and entrepreneurship for undergraduates, select topics related to direct analysis, make students more firmly grasp the core idea and design idea of the method. Through exploration and practice, the students master the design idea of direct analysis method, and the students application ability, practical ability, scientific research level and innovation ability are obviously improved.

      Abstract:The proposal of emerging engineering education gives the new connotation of multimedia courseware of civil engineering specialty. Based on the new situation of emerging engineering education construction and industry development of pre-fabricated buildings, this paper analyzed and summarized the current situation of multimedia courseware production, and proposed four principles of multimedia courseware production, teaching, flexibility, innovation and humanity. Taking the course of the fundamental theory of steel structure design in our school as an example, the basic ideas of multimedia courseware production were described in detail. The example of multimedia courseware is enriched content, strong characteristics of the times, obvious regional characteristics, deep ideological and political concepts and wide application. Practice shows that the teaching effect is satisfactory, which can provide some reference for the multimedia courseware production for similar engineering courses.

      Abstract:The talents training of intelligent construction engineering requires optimizing practical teaching system. The construction industry is undergoing an overall transformation, three salient features can be observed, one is to derive the industrialization of construction from the scarcity of manpower, the second is to shift from pipeline products to parts and components, and the third is to shift from one-time delivery to full-cycle operation and maintenance. Correspondingly, civil engineering engineers also have new demands for their job-fitting capabilities, such as the engineering capabilities of applied talents, the collaboration capabilities of building industrialization, and the data capabilities of product services. Applying system dynamics theory, analyze the causal chain, enhancement loop, adjustment loop and feedback mechanism between the two major variables of training teaching and skill acquisition. The research results show that civil engineering majors in local colleges and universities can learn from the design teaching context, man-machine interactive platform and integration of production and education courses in three aspects, optimize the connection relationship of training elements, reconstruct the multi-professional full-cycle training teaching system, and meet the needs of intelligent construction talents.

      Abstract:Based on online teaching method of the postgraduate professional course of building energy conservation, through the questionnaire survey, the advantages and disadvantages of online teaching are analyzed, corresponding countermeasures are taken. According to the characteristics of small-class teaching, Tencent Class is selected for course recording and playback, and combined with the QQ group sharing teaching form with better screen function and smooth operation, and STU teaching mode is set up to mobilize students’ study enthusiasm, stimulate the learning motivation and professional interests, using simulation software such as digital information transform boring theoretical knowledge into dynamic interactive learning.       Abstract:As the foundation course and core course of civil engineering-related specialties civil engineering construction course teaching is through online platforms in order to achieve the requirement of no suspension of classes during the period of epidemic prevention and control. Because the course of civil engineering construction has the characteristics of large amount of information, strong comprehensiveness and weak correlation between chapters, it is very important to explore an online teaching method that can not only enable students to adapt quickly but also ensure the quality of teaching. This online teaching is based on the civil engineering construction course of a university in South China. It is based on China University MOOC, Architectural Cloud Class, Tencent Class, QQ group and other online platforms. The questionnaire survey is used to evaluation of the effectiveness of online teaching. The results show that teaching based on multiple online platforms provides students with a rich and flexible way of learning, which can significantly improve students’ autonomous learning ability, expand their knowledge, and improve learning effects.

      Abstract:Knowing existing issues and inefficiencies of traditional teaching methods, this article proposes a new teaching mode that brings in deep integration of PinMing software and high-rise building construction course. The teaching mode focuses on the integration of both course content and teaching and learning objectives. It implements emerging technology into high-rise building curriculum to align with industry standards and development, to fulfill the talent acquisition needs from society and companies. Flipped classroom is adopted for teaching, and a student-centered teaching system of high-rise building construction and a diversified evaluation system centered on ability assessment are established to cultivate students’ engineering practice ability and BIM technology application ability, so as to realize the deep integration of information technology and teaching. The ideological and political elements contained in the curriculum are explored to form the synergistic effect of curriculum and ideological and political cooperation. The teaching mode of the deep integration of high-rise building construction courses and PinMing software provides students with a space for independent thinking and free play, creates opportunities to exercise various abilities, and forms a classroom situation that stimulates innovation.

      Abstract:Architectural design basic course is constrained by site constraints and traditional teaching mode, there are shortcomings of lack of engineering practice ability training, repetitive teaching, and students’ difficulty in understanding three-dimensional space. So, the virtual simulation experiment of Chinese southern pavilion construction of Zhejiang A&F University is developed. "Virtual construction" module is developed for engineering practice ability training, "basic cognition" module is developed for repetitive teaching problem and "case learning" module is developed for three-dimensional spatial cognition understanding problem, and explores the reform of teaching methods suitable for it. Teaching practices shows that virtual simulation experiments can largely compensate for the shortcomings of traditional teaching mode. With the continuous development and maturity of high-tech information technology, virtual simulation experiments will play an increasingly important role in teaching activities effect.
