    • Exploration of independent training of engineering science and technology innovation talents: based on multiple cases analysis of four universities

      Abstract:To explore the path of independent cultivation of engineering science and technology innovation talents, this paper selects four engineering colleges with different types and different characteristics based on subject evaluation and Times ranking results, and compares and analyzes their innovative talent cultivation models from three dimensions such as training objectives, training processes, and support systems. It finds that the independent cultivation of engineering science and technology innovation talents requires the establishment of a classified cultivation mechanism, and different universities should cultivate different types of innovative talents. Based on this, a training path with student-centered, school characteristics and classified training is proposed. At the same time, a pyramid of innovative talent types is proposed, and a matrix diagram of the innovation level of innovative talents mainly engaged in innovative activities is constructed. Based on China’s national conditions, five suggestions for independent cultivation of innovative talents in Chinese universities are proposed.

      Abstract:The teaching assistant system originated from Harvard University in the late 19th century. Practice and research have shown that teaching assistants play an important role in college teaching. Under the influence of China’s teaching assistant system, which aimed at helping the impoverished and helping the needy students for a long time, the graduate teaching assistant system has the problem of insufficient integration of the ability cultivation consciousness in the practice, which affects the efficiency of teaching assistant activities. Ohio State University has innovatively implemented all-round penetrating and capability-oriented teaching assistant team model composed of undergraduates and graduates in the first-year engineering program. Through the analysis of the characteristics and experience of the teaching assistant team model in OSU, this paper puts forward six enlightenments to the teaching assistant system of graduate students in China, including strengthening the understanding of teaching assistant system and improving the top-level design of teaching assistant system; making the teaching assistant organization system standard and clarifying responsibilities to strengthen management; designing selection criteria and procedures to make teaching assistant entrance strict; carrying out various forms of training to enrich the connotation of teaching assistants; improving the supervision and assessment system and refining the target comprehensive evaluation; increasing the pay and benefits of teaching assistants to attract more outstanding students.

      Abstract:Based on the engineering education certification of civil engineering major in Tongji University, the concept of outcome based education (OBE) is further applied to the ideological and political education of professional courses. Through the exploration of ideological and political elements of different types of typical professional courses and the development of ideological and political education means, the discipline ideological and political education system construction idea of supporting the graduation requirements of ideological and political education with ideological and political evaluation index points is formed, and the goal of collaborative progress among multiple courses is achieved. At the same time, through quantitative evaluation method that emphasizes both process and outcome, a closed link of sustainable improvement is formed. It aims to improve the quality of ideological and political education of civil engineering major in Tongji University, and provide reference for other colleges.

    • Evaluation on the learning effect of online and offline mixed teaching mode: take the course of engineering economics A as an example

      Abstract:In the mobile internet era, online and offline mixed teaching mode has become a new information-based teaching mode vigorously promoted by universities. With the purpose of exploring the application effect of online and offline mixed teaching mode in universities and thus effectively improving students’ professional knowledge level, taking undergraduate students who participate in the course of engineering economics A of Civil Engineering College of Southeast University as the research object, and taking MOOC online teaching platform as the data source, using SPSS24.0 software for statistical analysis, this paper analyzes the online and offline learning situation of undergraduate students from four indicators: the number and duration of video viewing, attendance and the accuracy rate of classroom practice. And the final examination results are analyzed from two aspects of online performance and after-class homework performance. The results show that there is a significant positive correlation between online scores, after-class homework scores and final examination scores. Online and offline mixed teaching mode is beneficial to develop learners’ scientific literacy of autonomous learning and inquiry practice, which can improve learning effect.

    • Research on the willingness and obstacle factors in virtual simulation courses construction for engineering management major

      Abstract:Virtual simulation teaching under the background of a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation provides new information gathering channels and high-quality practical operation blocks for engineering management major, expands the depth and breadth of experimental teaching, and achieves the integration of experimental teaching and information technology. In order to understand the construction of virtual simulation course of engineering management major under the background of emerging engineering, this study carries out a questionnaire survey for engineering management teachers nationwide, collecting data on the construction of virtual simulation teaching projects. By understanding the willingness to construct virtual simulation teaching projects, the obstacles are analyzed, and countermeasures and suggestions are proposed. The results show that more than 90% of the respondents believe that virtual simulation teaching is very important for the training of engineering management and engineering cost professionals, and recognize its role; however, only 22.54% of the respondents apply for or participate in the construction of virtual simulation teaching courses. The main obstacles include lack of funds, technical support and related resources support. This study has important practical significance in promoting the construction of virtual simulation teaching projects for engineering management major, and relevant suggestions and countermeasures can provide reference for the teaching construction of related majors in universities.

      Abstract:In response to the current demand for emerging engineering education, to deepen the reform of independent and innovative learning and teaching in higher education, based on the actual teaching situation of engineering majors, professional course teaching reform practices are carried out through online course platforms, and the independent and innovative learning mode of professional courses based on course platforms has been studied and explored. This study makes a dialectical analysis of the course mode, students’ autonomous learning performance, and course feedback based on quantitative analysis of practical teaching practices, and a teaching mode has been constructed that combines multiple course resources and online course platforms. The new teaching mode not only gains students’ recognition, but also helps to enhance students’ independent and innovative learning ability in professional teaching. Highlighting the cultivation of students’ independent innovation ability in emerging engineering education will help cultivate top-notch talents more effectively and meet the needs of social and economic sustainable development needs.

      Abstract:For a long time, colleges and universities generally carry out students’ discipline competition activities, and college students’ competition has become one of the important learning and display platforms that students admire and schools attach importance to. This paper points out the reasons that restrict the healthy development of discipline competition from the aspects of the relationship between curriculum teaching system and discipline competition, discipline competition organization and incubation mechanism. By introducing, digesting and absorbing the ideas of design thinking, based on the exploration of the School of Civil Engineering in Southwest Jiaotong University in recent years, this paper introduces the 1.0 version of the organization and management method of civil engineering discipline competition, which is based on ethics, student-centered, ability-oriented, and mutual promotion of competition and teaching, and its achievements, and points out the problems found in the implementation process. Based on the background of double first-class and emerging engineering construction, the 2.0 version of discipline competition guidance is proposed. The experience and outline can be used as reference for civil engineering colleges and comprehensive engineering colleges.

      Abstract:The rapid development of technology and the continuous transformation of industry have put forward new requirements and challenges for the reform of engineering education, while the concept of emerging engineering construction has been proposed. Especially in the whole process of talent cultivation in the field of civil engineering, the combination of teaching and practice can stimulate innovative thinking, improve engineering practice ability, and cultivate professional comprehensive quality of students. Aiming at the problems in geotechnical testing, which is a part of the course of soil mechanics, a portable miniature soil triaxial apparatus is developed and applied in the class in order to optimize teaching mode, strengthen classroom interaction by organizing graduate students of relevant scientific research direction and undergraduate students who are learning this knowledge points. Due to the small size, light weight and portability of the triaxial apparatus, as well as it can simulate the consolidation, shearing and drainage control functions of an actual triaxial apparatus, using it in the theoretical course is helpful for students to master the key operation steps of different types of triaxial tests. Students can better master the testing method and process of the triaxial test, understand the effective stress principle more intuitively and vividly, and enhance the knowledge related in the course of soil mechanics. Intuitively understanding the important principle that effective stress determines the strength and deformation characteristics of soil can stimulate the learning enthusiasm of students, improve their comprehensive practical ability, and effectively improve the teaching effect of related content in soil mechanics courses. Based on the purpose of learning the theoretical knowledge and improving practical ability, the reform of theory classroom and experiment teaching in the course of geotechnical engineering is explored and practiced. While the teaching promotes the practice, the development of this equipment promotes research. It can be a good method to build the bridge between knowledge in different stages. Through the equipment development and classroom feedback, the professional theoretical knowledge can be strengthened. Meanwhile, by constructing the practical teaching mode of undergraduate-graduate collaboration, and discussing the difficulties in the research and development of teaching AIDS of micro equipment, the professional talents with high professional ability and strong innovative thinking can be cultivated.

      Abstract:In the context of the gradual deepening of the construction of emerging engineering disciplines, it is imperative to reform the training model of water conservancy professionals. Taking Northeast Agricultural University as an example, this paper analyzes the current situation and existing problems of the cultivation of water conservancy professionals in a targeted and systematic manner, and is oriented to meet the needs of modern water conservancy talents construction, and explores new model of talent training meeting the demands of future water conservancy majors. Combined with the orientation of Northeast Agricultural University, it has created a new teaching model of multiple linkages to build education carriers, innovative programs to train outstanding talents. And with the goal of emphasizing practice, strengthening abilities, improving quality, and seeking innovation, an in-depth reform of talent training model in integration of work and study has been conducted. The construction of the core competence and multiple linkage training model for water conservancy majors based on the background of emerging engineering is in line with the development trend of the water conservancy industry, and it has improved the competitiveness of graduates of water conservancy majors. It is expected to provide a certain reference for the construction of emerging engineering disciplines in water conservancy majors.

By strengthening the consistency between undergraduate and postgraduate programs and integrating professional and general education, a series of key reforms have been conducted on design courses, training modes, teaching contents, design teaching staff organization, and double degree programs. What have been achieved in the current stage by the experiment and exploration of Tongji could pioneer a deeper and wider reflection and transformation of Chinese architecture education.

      Abstract:This paper takes the introduction of civil engineering course as an example under the background of wide civil engineering. A flipped-mixed teaching framework with SPOC platform as the carrier and issue eliciting, precision teaching, personalized learning as the main line is constructed, which combines with various elements of modern information and traditional teaching mode. Subsequently, the case design is carried out and the teaching effectiveness is evaluated. The results show that the flipped-mixed teaching provides accurate, rich, diversified and personalized online resources and whole-process interaction, which stimulates the initiative of students’ independent learning and breaks the time and space limit of teaching activities. It makes students’ understanding, mastering and application of new knowledge more in-depth and comprehensive through preliminary internalization before class, deep internalization in class and comprehensive internalization after class. The mixing model is benefit to the improvement of individual comprehensive quality and complex engineering problems solving ability of students, by means of guiding interaction, exploring students’ strengths and cultivating students’ individual development.

      Abstract:It is an important direction for the curriculum reform of architecture to implement the dual carbon targets and method of new-type urbanization in China into the practice of green building education. Based on students’ feedback and curriculum teaching review of the green building course at Guizhou University, this paper analyzes the root causes of the problems existing in green building courses, such as time-delay and delayed effect, separation of learning and application, that is, the course positioning is vague, the teaching process is monotonous, and students’ demands are ignored. Thereout, the teaching goals of solid learning, practical effect and practical application are extracted combining the OBE concept. Accordingly, the knowledge and cognitive module, experimental module, and practice module are set up in the teaching plan. And the integrated overall process teaching methods including interesting introduction before class, digital interaction in class and dynamic feedback after class are used, to condense into a green building curriculum reform program with the purpose of pragmatic, achieving the purposes that students grasp application ability and their designs are effective, and forming a new path of integrating curriculum practice into dual carbon knowledge graph. Finally, in view of the new problems in the practice of the course reform, suggestions are put forward to control classroom teaching time, strengthen the connection between courses and integrate design and technical teaching. This curriculum reform has bridged the gap between green building theory and application, provided experience for China’s green building teaching, enriched the theoretical framework of green building talent training, and boosted the high-quality development of green building.

    • Design of the experimental teaching in the course of testing and inspecting of underground engineering

      Abstract:Testing and inspecting of underground engineering is a practical discipline, and the experimental teaching is an essential part of this course. However, the actual in-situ underground monitoring and inspecting tests are generally difficult to conduct on campus, since they are always laborious, time-consuming, and high-risking. Meanwhile, the model box experiments are so far from the engineering reality. Consequently, this paper proposes a simulated test design in the experimental teaching. By simplifying the standard testing steps, two simulated test design cases of soil pressure test under preloading and plate loading test (PLT) are presented, making good use of open space on the campus and the available testing equipment in the lab. The teaching practice shows that, following the experimental steps of the simulated test design, students could smoothly accomplish the tests and obtain testing data with rather good quality, and good teaching result could be achieved. It leads to several benefits to conduct the experimental teaching according to the designed simulated experimental procedures, including enhancing students’ understanding of the experimental principles, obtaining vivid feeling of how in-situ tests are conducted, and ensuring the safety of the students and teachers in the testing. It is an effective way to conduct the experimental teaching according to the proposed simulated test design.

      Abstract:The major of civil engineering (structural engineering) requires graduates to have adequate knowledge concerning structural design and a certain level of engineering practical application ability. For students minoring in civil engineering, there are issues such as tight schedules, heavy tasks, and high learning difficulty. An academic investigation on the difficulties encountered in minor course teaching has been conducted and solutions are proposed. During the investigation, the concrete structure course, which values both theory and practice, is taken as an example. It is shown that the theoretical foundation of students taking minor courses are weak, the teaching time for students from different majors is difficult to arrange, prolonged class may lead to fatigue of teachers and students, and it is difficult for students to catch up if they fail in the exam. Therefore, lecturers should pay attention to the vividness and retrospectivity of theoretical knowledge teaching, which can be realized through experiments, animation videos and online courses. Moreover, the cultivation of practice ability should be highlighted. The teaching time for theoretical knowledge and engineering practice should be reasonably planned. Case study of engineering application examples and accident cases can be carried out to develop the problem-solving ability and professional responsibility of students.

      Abstract:Steel and concrete composite structures have been widely used in civil engineering, but there are still gaps in the teaching practice of composite structure experiments for undergraduates. In response to this situation, School of Civil Engineering of Tongji University sets up a teaching reform project involves steel and concrete composite members based on the existing basic principles of steel structures experimental course. In this project, testing equipment and instrumentations are developed, the specimens of steel and concrete composite beams are designed, the scope of the key knowledge points is clarified, and the standards for curriculum assessment are proposed. The course reform strives to enable students to master the concept of composite structural members and the method of experiment, improve the experimental operation and data processing abilities, recognize the performance advantages of composite structures in engineering applications, strengthen the engineering practice and comprehensive analysis abilities, and compensate the deficiencies of the existing steel structure experimental teaching content.

      Abstract:The requirements of bridge construction safety and quality on construction technology are getting higher and higher, and the development of bridge construction needs more technical talents engaged in bridge construction. Bridge construction is one of the core courses in the bridge engineering direction for undergraduate civil engineering. However, in the teaching process, it is faced with such problems as wide coverage of course content, scattered knowledge points, single teaching methods and weak practices, which can easily lead to poor teaching effect and depressing students’ enthusiasm in learning professional courses. In view of the corresponding problems, the teaching improvements are discussed on the optimization of the curriculum knowledge system, the utilization of the construction site multimedia resources, and the introduction of the site construction information system and the virtual simulation platform. The corresponding teaching exploration effect is verified based on the curriculum design and examination of the bridge support construction part of the course. The results show that students’ interest can be stimulated by combing the main knowledge points, highlighting the teaching key points and supplementing the new technology on site. Through on-site pictures selecting, knowledge points explaining by engineering animation, and construction site videos and other information materials introducing, the key points of the course content are strengthened. Course learning and practice design through MOOC and virtual simulation experiment platform effectively improve the teaching effect. The analysis of the course objectives achievement degree of the bridge support construction course indicates that the students have expanded their knowledge and vision, the teaching effect has reached the expected goal, and the relevant teaching methods have been verified, which provides a reference for the optimization and improvement of similar courses.

      Abstract:As an important carrier of higher education, teaching materials play a significant role in improving the teaching quality of colleges and universities and cultivating excellent professionals. They are a strategic measure to comprehensively promote the ideological and political construction of courses and implement the fundamental task of fostering virtue and cultivating talents. In this paper, the ideological and political construction of the teaching material steel bridge is based on the advanced teaching content and focusing on the appropriate and promoting ideological and political content, so that the teaching material steel bridge is more high-level, innovative and challenging. Firstly, this paper re-understands the ideas of curriculum based ideological and political education, condenses the ideological and political elements and classifies them. Then, according to the knowledge points in each chapter of the teaching material steel bridge, combined with the integration of seven ideological and political elements in education, the curriculum based ideological and political design is realized, and the relationship between professional knowledge points and curriculum based ideological and political elements is established. Finally, it constructs the ideological and political content in the teaching material to realize the characteristic teaching content of the ideological and political teaching material steel bridge.       Abstract:The combination of OBE concept and curriculum based ideological and political education, integrates value shaping, knowledge imparting and ability training, attaches importance to the output of teaching process, and embodies the concept of student-centered and fostering morality and cultivating people. Taking the highly practical civil engineering surveying course as an example, based on the analysis of the connotation and extension of curriculum based ideological and political education of civil engineering surveying, this paper puts forward the idea of teaching optimization design under the guidance of curriculum based ideological and political education from the aspects of curriculum system, teaching content, teaching process and teaching methods. Combined with the characteristics of the course, this paper explores the ideological and political elements contained in the course content, and takes the ideological and political teaching design of the leveling principle as an example to explore the integration of professional knowledge points and ideological and political elements, to provide reference for the curriculum based ideological and political education reform of engineering majors.

      Abstract:Ideological and political theories teaching in all courses has the era value such as value shaping and ability cultivation, is the external embodiment of the change in educational structure. Taking urban and rural security and comprehensive disaster prevention planning course as an example, this paper discusses the feasibility and necessary of ideological and political education reform of the course. The paper explores the explicit and implicit ideological and political elements contained in the course, and then puts forward the mode to integrate ideological and political elements into the course which is mainly guided by teaching method, supplemented by positive and negative case method and task-driven method. The whole framework of ideological and political teaching of this course is constructed based on the original teaching chapters. So as to achieve the genetic integration of professional knowledge and ideological and political elements, enrich the academic background and theoretical connotation, and achieve the educational goal of moral education.
